The World's Children

  • More than ten million children still die each year from preventable causes. That's 30,000 a day - or one every three seconds.
  • One billion lack access to safe drinking water.
  • 30 million are not vaccinated against diseases that could be prevented.
  • Over 150 million still suffer from malnutrition.
  • More than 250 million children have to work so that their families can eat.
  • 125 million children do not go to school - the majority girls.
  • 100 million have been orphaned as the result of HIV/AIDS.
  • Every year at least half a million children go partially or totally blind because of vitamin A deficiency.
  • 1.2 million girls under 18 are trafficked for prostitution each year - with over 1,000,000 children working in the sex trade in Asia alone.
  • Some 300,000 children serve as soldiers in conflicts spanning 50 countries.
  • Two million children have been killed and six million permanently injured in conflicts in the past ten years.
